"I understand the winner is selected by the previous winners," she said. "I guess they are familiar with my work, although it's mostly in design categories."
But she has won a number of Peles in various design categories, enough that she couldn't remember just how many over the six years she has been on Maui. "It's about 12 to 15," she said.
"I was very shocked, dumbfounded basically, because I really don't know how I was selected. I'm still shocked. It's really quite flattering," she said.
For Potratz, it was a particularly satisfying recognition for someone who is passionate about the role of good, professional design in business. Emphasize "professional."
Too often, she thinks, managers settle for too little. Or, too many people have approval rights, and so a good start leads to a less-than-satisfactory finish.
So she cherishes her clients who share her perfectionism, like Four Seasons General Manager Radha Arora, who is leaving Wailea to manage the Regent Beverly Wilshire.
For the Four Seasons spa brochure, she had a selection of photographs, in bright colors but - to her taste for this assignment - lacking the subtlety for the image that Four Seasons' exclusive spa seeks to project.
For a different client, with a somewhat less tony spa, she's done brochures that do use bright photos.
For the Four Seasons, she choose a muted palette and looked within her supply of photos for lines - of a woman's face, for example - that could be made to carry a sort of mountain-range theme through the several pages.
For the copy, she selected different Hawaiian plants, like noni, whose qualities illustrated the theme, 'Tis the Season, Be Generous (to yourself).
